WPS ~ 2008/9 Competition Rules

1) WPS have two Points Series competitions, each consisting of three rounds, which span the whole season. They are “Prints” (Mono and Colour) and “DPI’s” (Digitally Projected Images).

2) In addition there are several stand alone competitions including the “Best of Season”, the “Outings Cup”, the “WPS Members AV Competition”, the “Summer” and “Winter” Projects and the “WPS 5-A-Side” competition.

3) The Points Series and the Best of Season competitions will have two categories – Novice and Advanced. All other competitions will be judged together, in other words, with no separate categories.

4) A WPS Novice Member is defined as a member who has not won any WPS Point Series competitions or had any work accepted in any outside competitions. It is the policy of WPS to encourage all members, both novice and advanced, to enter our competitions if they so wish.

5) All entrants must be fully paid up Members of the Society before the first (or only) round of any competition to qualify for entry.

6) All work entered in a Points Series competition is automatically eliminated from subsequent Society competitions other than the present season’s “Best of Season”, “Outings Cup”, “Themed” or a WPS “Five-A-Side” competition.

7) Marking – Entries for Point Series Print and DPI competitions will be marked on a scale of 1 mark to 10 marks. The judges will be encouraged to use the full range of marks. In the event of more than one entrant achieving the same total of marks at the end of the third round of these competitions, reference will be made to their marks in the two previous rounds to decide the winner.

8) DPI’s – (Digitally Projected Images) DPI’s must be submitted in accordance with the current DPI competition rules which can be found on the “Competitions” page of our web site www.wolverhamptonps.co.uk These rules are also available in printed form from the Competition Secretary. Entries not in the correct format will be excluded from the competition. Entries are limited to two images per member, per round. Each image will be projected “as presented” with no post-submission manipulation. Images can be submitted up to one week before the competition to the WPS DPI Facilitator on CD or Memory Stick clearly marked with your name. 9) Prints – Entries are limited to two per member, per round in each of two categories – Monochrome* Prints and Colour Prints. Maximum mount size 20” x 16” (500mm x 400mm). Minimum print size 50 square inches. Any print entry that does not fall within these dimensions will be excluded. A completed Society entry form must be submitted to the competition secretary at least one week prior to the competition date. Entry forms can be downloaded from our web site.

*FIAP Monochrome definition - “Black and White shall be either un-toned or fully toned work only. Partial toning or the addition of one colour renders the work Colour”.


10) Best Of Season – Entries are limited to two per worker, in each of three categories – DPI’s, Monochrome Prints and Colour Prints. All entries must be selected from work already presented and judged during the present season but may be an improved version if the worker so wishes. Novice and Advanced workers will have their own sections giving a total of six sections altogether.

11) Outings Cup – Entries limited to two Prints and/or DPI’s per worker. The cup is for the best Print or DPI taken on a Society outing. There are no separate Novice or Advanced sections – all entries will be judged together.

12) Summer and Winter Projects – Entries to be selected from work taken after the date of the previous AGM, i.e. the date the project themes were decided upon by the membership at the AGM. There are no Novice or Advanced sections – all entries will be judged together.

13) DPI’s and Prints of a similar nature are to be discouraged.

14) A condition of entry of any piece of work into any competition is that it shall be made available for retention and possible selection for entry into any outside competition, exhibition or portfolio. In all cases the copyright will remain with the photographer.

15) If, for any reason, a WPS Competition evening is interrupted, the judge may be asked if he/she could take the remaining entries home with them to complete the judging. The Competition Secretary will make arrangements to collect the entries from the judge together with a completed score sheet.

Points Series competitions only – Members may submit 7” x 5” un-mounted prints for judge’s comments only with no marks being awarded.

Print Labelling: In order to ensure the safe return of prints to their owners and to ease the entry of prints into external competitions the following information is required on the back of the mount of each print:

• The print title in large, easy to read lettering

• The photographers name and address in small lettering

• The photographers current WPS Membership Number

• The wording “Wolverhampton Photographic Society”

All labels must be a permanently fixed printed label on the reverse of the mount (or written directly onto the back of the mount) near the bottom and centered left to right. “Post-it” notes and the like are not acceptable. Suitable print labels can be downloaded from our web site.
