The Peel Arms public house dated back to Victorian times and is shown here about 1924 when John Dickinson was the licencee. Kelly's directory of that year lists his address with the unusual number 22 1/2 Peel Street. Some years later it ceased trading as a public house and changed its name to Peel House, providing food and logings. Plans for a new ring road were due to be completed by 1964 so demolition contractors were called in and completed thier job about 1962. Reproduction courtesy of Roy Hawthorne and Sutton Publishing |
