Review of "Going Wild" with Andy Rouse

Dormston Mill Theatre, Sedgley

8th December 2005

Anyone who had the pleasure and good fortune to be in the main auditorium of Dormston Mill Theatre on the evening of Thursday 8th December 2005 was treated to stunning wildlife photographic images and a tremendously entertaining few hours of anecdotes from Andy Rouse, world famous professional wildlife photographer extraordinaire.

Andy Rouse presented the evening in his own inimitable style of photographic hints and tips, personal anecdotes and a (liberal) smattering of bad jokes. It was both entertaining and inspirational for photographers and non-photographers alike. We were treated to stunning images from around the globe, such as: kingfishers plunging in for the catch, penguins surfing in the Falklands, polar bears with their young and the antics of grizzly bears. All of the images left the audience awestruck by the dedication, extraordinary field craft skills and sheer talent of the man and his art. We all came out of the theatre knowing more about the animals - and their sometimes odd behaviours than when we went in.

With a character all of his own, Andy endeared himself to a packed theatre with great humour, energy and enthusiasm. In addition to savouring this natural entertainer, the delighted audience was heard to repeatedly gasp and wonder at the amazing photographic images that punctuated Andy's stories.

Andy finished the evening with his own disturbing experiences of the effects of global warming, which is causing shrinking of the polar icecaps. This could well have significant impacts on the future of the local wildlife, particularly the polar bear.

We also held a raffle with a prizes including a fantastic range of Lowepro camera bags. Many thanks to our sponsor, Daymen International (the principal Lowepro distributor in the UK) for their generosity. Gordon Uprichard was the lucky winner of the Lowepro Dryzone Rover main prize.

"Going Wild with Andy Rouse", organised by Wolverhampton Photographic Society, was hailed as a huge success.

We are now planning our follow-up event - keep watching this web site for details!
